Candle Care (How to Prevent Tunneling)
To get the most out of your handmade soy candles, the “first burn” is everything. Wax has a memory. The first time you light your new candle, allow it to burn until the melt pool reaches the very edges of the vessel (usually 2 to 3 hours). This prevents “candle tunneling”—that frustrating ring of hard wax that gets left on the sides of the jar. Always trim your wick to 1/4 inch before each use to ensure a clean, smoke-free burn.
Yes. Unlike traditional paraffin wax (which is derived from petroleum), soy wax is a natural, renewable resource that burns cleaner and produces significantly less soot. When paired with non-toxic fragrances and lead-free wicks, soy candles are a much safer choice for your respiratory health and your home’s air quality.
If your candle has tunneled, don’t throw it away! You can fix it using the “foil method.” Wrap a piece of aluminum foil around the top edge of the candle vessel, leaving a hole in the center for the flame. The foil reflects the heat back down, melting the hard wax on the edges. Let it burn for 1-2 hours until the surface is completely even again. (Note: Be careful, as the vessel will get very hot!)
For the best fragrance throw and a safe burn, we recommend burning your candle for no more than 3 to 4 hours at a time. Allowing the candle to cool and trimming the wick before relighting ensures the vessel doesn’t overheat and the wax maintains its quality.
